The Society of Arts and Crafts’ Mentor Program, launched in 2005, prepares emerging artists for participation in premier craft shows through their participation in CraftBoston Holiday. Central to the program is a multi-year association with CraftBoston Holiday, a retail craft show produced by Society of Arts + Crafts. A competitive show comprised of over 175 exhibitors, CraftBoston Holiday is the premier exhibition and sale of contemporary craft in New England, showcasing one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces in baskets, ceramics, decorative fiber, wearables, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, and wood. Presented at the Hynes Convention Center in Bostonʼs Back Bay neighborhood, CraftBoston Holiday is conveniently located in a fashionable, concentrated shopping district perfect for the Holiday season.  

Recognized for its innovative approach, the Mentor Program combines the organizationʼs resources with those of CraftBoston. Participants attend a series of training meetings at Society of Arts + Crafts and work with each other, artist mentors, and show management to design a shared, subsidized booth at CraftBoston Holiday. After completion of their first year, Mentor Program participants are eligible for a subsidized independent 10'x10' booth at CraftBoston Holiday the following year as a second-year participant. Society of Arts + Crafts specifically highlights its Mentor Program participants at CraftBoston and is committed to their continued success. 

First-Year Mentor participants will learn how to prepare for a retail craft show by designing and realizing a shared subsidized booth at CraftBoston Holiday. Each participant will be required to pay a fee to participate and attend 2-3 meetings (in person or by conference call) to train with working professionals on marketing, legal, insurance issues, show operations, portfolio development, pricing, sales, and booth design.


Priority will be given to artists out of school five years or less, but all are welcome to apply.

Society of Arts + Crafts invites artists to apply for participation in the following media categories: baskets, ceramics, fiber decorative, fiber wearable, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, and wood.

Categories not included: calligraphy, painting, photography, lithography, etc., except when incorporated into an otherwise acceptable craft category.


The application deadline for the CraftBoston Holiday 2019 Mentor Program is April 1st, 2019.

Selected applicants will be notified April 8th, 2019.

At least three group meetings will be held throughout the early to late fall at the Society of Arts + Crafts. The group will discuss the various facets of craft shows through discussion, images accompanied with informative handouts of tricks of the trade. We would like our first meeting to be held at an agreed-upon time during CraftBoston Spring, which takes place at the Cyclorama in Boston, April 12th - 14th, 2019.

CraftBoston features artists who demonstrate excellence in craftsmanship. Before applying, please make sure your work meets the following criteria:


• All work must be original and made by hand or with the use of appropriate tools. CraftBoston encourages one-of-a-kind and limited edition work.

• No commercial reproductions of any kind are allowed. This includes embellished commercially made objects and works assembled (wholly or in part) from commercially available kits.

• Artists accepted for participation must be in attendance at their booth during the entire show. No agent, dealers, or representative may attend in place of the artist.

• Collaborating artists are permitted, however, any representation other than a true, hands-on artistic collaboration is not permitted.

• Artists may only show work in categories selected by the jury. All work exhibited must be of the same body, quality, category of work that was juried through digital images.

• Because attending the meetings is required, artists must live/work in New England (Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont).

• Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

• Second-Year applicants must show portfolio growth to be considered.



First-Year Mentor participants will share a booth (10ʼx15ʼ, 10ʼx20ʼ or 10ʼx30ʼ TBD) and will be charged $275 per person. This price reflects a 70%+ discount off of the regular booth rate and included pipe and drape but does not include lighting, electricity, and booth display.

Second-Year Mentor participants will each have a 10x10ʼ booth and will be charged $562.50 each. This price reflects a 50% discount off of the regular booth rate and includes pipe and drape. Additional booth environment elements such as lighting, electricity, and booth display are the responsibility of the artist.
